Advocacy to allow the use of the first letter of the mother’s name as an initial
A woman from Karur District filed for redress in the Madurai Chamber of the Madras High Court on Friday after authorities at the public school where her daughter was studying insisted they provide the first letter of the father’s name as initial of the daughter, despite the fact that all government documents had the first letter of the mother’s name as the initial.
The petitioner, Mr Pothumponnu from Kadavur taluk in Karur district, stated that her daughter P. Kaviya was studying in class IX at Kadavur public secondary school. The petitioner said that her husband had deserted the family and that she was living with her parents. She took care of the family and her daughter’s education expenses, she said.
She said that at the time of her admission to the school herself, she provided the first letter of her name as an initial to her daughter, and all government documents, including the Aadhaar card, bore the same. She said her daughter preferred the first letter of her mother’s name as the initial, not her father’s name.
Under these circumstances, her daughter applied for an examination grant. But, school authorities advised her to provide the first letter of her father’s name as an initial. She said authorities told her the issue would also be raised at the time of the Class X public examination.
Judge Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy requested a state response. The court adjourned the hearing to October 26.
