Elevate your enterprise data technology and strategy to Transform 2021.
Starting data collaboration Atlan announced today that it has secured $ 16.5 million in a round of funding led by Insight Ventures. The company says the capital, which brings the total raised to date to more than $ 21 million, will fund the development and expansion of the platform over the coming months.
DataOps enabled through data collaboration or analyzing multiple datasets to gain insight can add tremendous value to a business. Forty-five percent of businesses run at least some big data workload in the cloud, according to ZDNet. And the global big data market is expected to reach $ 103 billion in 2027, Forbes reports, date on which 90% of IT professionals increased their spending on analysis tools.
Atlan started as an internal initiative of the “data for good” company SocialCops and has been incubated in over 200 data projects, including in India. National data and analysis platform and the United Nations National SDG Data Platforms. By acting as a hub for assets ranging from boards and dashboards to models and code, Atlan seeks to empower teams to create a source of truth while collaborating through integrations with data warehouses, chat apps like Slack and business and data science tools.
Applying Analysis to Data
Atlan’s platform performs automatic data profiling to identify outliers, missing values, sensitive data and anomalies. It also correlates business terms with data objects to generate a common understanding of data and how it is used. Atlan can reveal how data has evolved throughout its lifecycle and predict how assets will evolve in the future. Additionally, it can help manage data usage with granular governance and access controls.
Atlan can be configured to send alerts to stakeholders if something goes wrong and to require approval to access metadata and overviews of datasets, linked assets, associated classifications and glossaries. Online discussions and annotations apparently help users stay on the same page, as do Excel-like queries like filters, aggregations, and grouping of data from data lakes and warehouses.
Atlan also offers a “bot ecosystem” with an auto-lineage bot that leverages SQL query history and logs to build column-level lineage on a data stack. Another bot – a “Self-Identifying Information (PPI)” bot – reads the contents of database columns to detect PII columns and apply sensitive data classifications. And a column description bot automatically recommends a column description for columns based on lineage and past training data.
“Data assets today are not just tables, but code, models, BI dashboards and pipelines,” said Atlan co-founder Prukalpa Sankar. “At Atlan, we’re reinventing the human experience with data – why can’t data be shared as easily as sharing a link on Google Docs, or if Google Analytics can tell you usage on a site Web, why can’t we do the same for our data? “
The benefits of data
Companies that have adopted data strategies are reporting significant benefits. An entrepreneur 2019 investigation found that big data saw an 8% to 10% increase in profits, as well as a 10% reduction in overall cost. Unsurprisingly, analysts are almost twice as likely as others to report adopting a long-term strategy to respond to changes in basic business practices, according to at McKinsey.
Atlan has 40 employees and claims to have experienced rapid growth in this context, growing 16 times higher in the last two fiscal quarters. The company says its platform is currently used by teams from large companies like Unilever, Scripps Health and Postman. In the case of India’s national data and analytics platform, Atlan has connected 42 databases across 25 national ministries in 12 months, which the company says is the fastest such deployment in the world. .
“Atlan applies the principles of DataOps – agility, reproducibility, documentation first approach – to a relatively traditional space in the data management industry that has not seen much innovation over the past decade. : metadata management, ”a spokesperson told VentureBeat. “Atlan [has] metadata reimagined using a collaborative approach. By acting as a virtual hub for data assets ranging from tables and dashboards to models and code, Atlan enables teams to create a single source of truth for all of their data assets and collaborate across the data stack. modern through deep integrations with tools like Slack, business intelligence tools, data science tools and more. “
Angel and existing investors have also been involved in Atlan’s fundraising round, including former Snowflake CEO Bob Muglia, Stitch co-founders Bob Moore and Jake Stein, Safegraph and LiveRamp founder, Auren Hoffman, Sequoia Surge and Waterbridge. Ventures.
