Earthquake 5.9 September 17 21:28 (GMT +11)
According to the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ), the earthquake struck on Friday, September 17, 2021 at 9:28 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the coming hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies release their report.
A second report was later released by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the National Seismic Monitoring Network (RéNaSS) in France at magnitude 5.4 and the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) at magnitude 5.8.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken glass, etc.
In Sola (1,200 inhabitants) located 64 km from the epicenter, the earthquake should have been felt as slight tremors.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update the magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant earthquake news becomes available.
