Young Texas girls who dream of careers in media and tech get a push from Barbie.

Barbie has announced a new one-year partnership with Austin-based Latinitas, a non-profit organization dedicated to making all girls realize their dreams. Although based in Austin, Latinitas offers programs throughout Texas, including San Antonio, as well as New Mexico, California and Massachusetts through weekend and summer camps, mentoring. , conferences and more.

Latinitas mission aligns with Barbie’s Dream Gap project. The ‘dream gap’ is described as the period during a girl’s childhood, usually around the age of 5, when she begins to feel as if boys are smarter and becomes discouraged from pursuing her dreams. big dreams. Barbie launched the initiative in 2018 to help close the gap and push girls toward their goals.

“This year, we continue to examine how all of the girls in BIPOC – who face challenges beyond gender stereotypes – are affected differently by the Dream Gap,” Barbie says online. “We are identifying concrete solutions and partnering with charities that work every day to help break down barriers for these girls. “

Barbie donates $ 50,000 to programs to explore STEAM and digital media activities focused on areas such as coding, filmmaking, entrepreneurship and more.

Other Barbie 2021 charitable partners are Black Girls Code and Girls Leadership, two organizations based in California, and Girls Make Beats, based in Miami.

“Dreams take a vision. Pursuing them takes courage. All girls deserve both,” Barbie says online.

Latinitas was not immediately available to respond to requests for comment, but shared the news on Facebook on Sunday.

“Barbie and Latinitas certainly do, providing girls with the encouragement, support and vision they need to be whatever their hearts desire,” the post read. “Being part of the Latinitas team and partnering with Barbie to do this amazing job was just a dream for me as a girl, now a reality! Hold on, here they are!

Barbie’s donation will help Latinitas reach more than 600 girls, according to the online group. The public can donate through GoFundMe here.
