The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of 18 km below the epicenter near General Santos City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, early in the morning on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at 3:46 a.m. local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the next few hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) which listed the earthquake at a magnitude of 5.1. Other agencies reporting the same earthquake include the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8 and the Indian National Center for Seismology (NCS) at magnitude 5.1.
Based on preliminary seismic data, the quake was likely felt by many people in the epicenter area. It should not have caused any significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Malbang (2,400 inhabitants) located 20 km from the epicenter and in Glan (24,300 inhabitants) 23 km away, the earthquake should have been felt as a slight tremor.
Weak tremors could have been felt in Malapatan (19,400 inhabitants) located 42 km from the epicenter, General Santos City (679,600 inhabitants) 50 km, Alabel (43,300 inhabitants) 54 km, Polomolok (64,000 inhabitants ) 60 km 71 km, Maluñgun (52,200 inhabitants) 71 km, Surallah (31,100 inhabitants) 84 km, Bañga (58,900 inhabitants) 88 km and the town of Koronadal (125,500 inhabitants) 94 km .
