Lobo refuses to change name from Nehru Maidan to Mangaluru
Former MP JR Lobo of Mangaluru City South raised objections saying that Karnataka Sahitya Academy in a book, “Swatantrya Horatadalli Karnataka Kendra Maidan”, published by it, changed Nehru Maidan’s name in Mangaluru to Kendra Maidan .
In a statement published here recently, Mr Lobo said it was regrettable that the BJP tried to change the name of the well-known maidan as Nehru Maidan after former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Now he has implemented his “hidden agenda” through the academy.
The former MP said that Nehru addressed the freedom fighters in the same maidan in 1937 and that in 1941 several meetings related to the freedom struggle were held in the maidan. Hence, the maidan had been named after him in 1966. Mangaluru City Corporation had installed a statue of Nehru in the maidan in 2016.
The BJP, to twist the story, had made several attempts to call the maidan as Kendra Maidan. Now the academy has followed in the footsteps of the BJP. The academy should not alter history by caving in to pressure from a political party. Such action is not forgivable.
“Therefore, the academy should ask for an apology from the people. They should rectify the mistake made and correct the name to Nehru Maidan,” he said.
