Manchester United fans name the team they want to see in Rangnick’s opener against Crystal Palace
Manchester United will look to make a winning start under the leadership of new interim manager Ralf Rangnick when they host Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, kick off at 2 p.m.
United, who have won just one of their last four meetings with Palace, will look to build on Thursday night’s thrilling 3-2 win over Arsenal and record back-to-back Premier League wins for the second time in season only.
A brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and a lone strike from Bruno Fernandes was enough to seal all three points for the Reds, as Rangnick took a lookout briefing in the directors’ lodge, before entering the dugout for the first time on Sunday .
With a new manager now in place, along with the confidence that will have been gained from the victory over Arsenal, United will imagine their chances of getting the upper hand over a winless Palace side in their last three matches.
Former Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be back available for selection after missing the game midweek, but Raphael Varane, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani remain on the sidelines.
But how do United fans want to see Rangnick face Palace? Below, MEN Sports took a close look at what United supporters voted for using our interactive widget.
Goalkeeper – David de Gea
Despite being in the spotlight for some strange and unforgettable reason against Arsenal, De Gea has always played a key role in helping United secure three points.
His search for a first clean sheet at Old Trafford this season may still be ongoing, but the Spaniard has been in inspired form this quarter and made a nice save in the second half on Thursday night, turning down Gabriel, to prove once again its worth.
Unsurprisingly, United fans want to see him start in goal.
Defense – Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Alex Telles
As for the last four, United supporters want Rangnick to hit the cut-and-paste button of the victory over Arsenal.
Even though Luke Shaw and Wan-Bissaka may be back in contention, United supporters want to see Dalot and Telles continue in the full-back positions, with Maguire and Lindelof lined up at center-back.
If Rangnick goes with the same foursome that started against Arsenal, they will have to prove their worth to the German, as he has already put emphasis on United restoring a sense of control and balance at the back.
Midfielder – Fred, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek
Fred and Fernandes both played key roles in United’s victory over Arsenal and fans want them to retain their place in the starting XI against Palace.
Fred claimed the assist for Fernandes’ strike in the first half and won the penalty for Ronaldo to crush the match winner. Midfielder Scott McTominay, however, hasn’t had such a big impact on the game and fans are calling for him to be abandoned at the expense of Van de Beek.
United fans are hopeful that Rangnick’s arrival at the club will give the Dutchman a new lease on life at Old Trafford and they want to see him start at the start of the German’s tenure.
If Rangnick grants the fans’ wish and both Van de Beek and Fernandes start, it would provide a very attacking look for the United midfielder.
Attack – Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Marcus Rashford
Copy and paste – again.
United supporters want Rangnick to go with the exact same front-three that started against Arsenal, but with a slight tactical change.
They want to see Sancho move to the right flank, with Rashford moving to the left. The pair traded for Arsenal often, but Sancho spent more time on the left wing, unlike his natural bunk on the right side.
Unsurprisingly, supporters want to see Ronaldo spearheading the front line.
United’s departing supporters want to see against Crystal Palace: De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Lindelof, Telles; Fred, Van de Beek, Fernandes; Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford.
