One of K-drama’s most dynamic stars, Han So Hee, stars as a woman who can’t be stopped in her quest to avenge her father’s death in Netflix’s My Name.
Yes, even if that meant fighting to survive in a world of “savage” men.
In the women-centric action series, So Hee is Jiwoo, a young woman who joins an organized crime syndicate and later assumes a new identity to become a mole in the police force, while trying to uncover the truth. on the death of his father.
Speaking in a virtual press conference attended by The STAR, the 26-year-old actress said, “Jiwoo is everything. That’s the kind of character she is. Jiwoo has to witness her father’s death in at a very young age, and she has no choice but to embark on this path.I feel sorry for her, but at the same time, I admire her determination and the strength that she carries.
From Bride and Groom (2020), the highest-rated cable drama in Korean television history, where she first rose to fame by boiling audiences’ blood as a sultry and daring mistress, So Hee enters now in the action world – and without any hesitation.
Director Kim Jin Min, best known for merging Netflix’s dark high school drama Extracurricular, said, “This is the story of someone seeking revenge. Han So Hee’s character meets all of these different characters as she takes the solemn path to get revenge for her father’s death.
When offered the lead role, the director recalled asking him two questions: “Do you want to do it or not?” And are you going to train? I told her that it would be a heavy responsibility and that there was a risk that she would get hurt. At the same time, he told her, the series “could also be a great opportunity for her.”
Director Jin Min was grateful that the actress went all out, doing more than was asked of her, like training in an action school before her co-stars.
Veteran actor revealed Park Hee Soon, who plays a gang leader who becomes Jiwoo’s mentor and father figure, “Han So Hee actually started training a month before the rest of us.”
It had to, according to the director, 99% of the action was carried out by the actors themselves. These scenes were as real as they get, less reliant on computer graphics and loaded with emotion.
So Hee said, “I would describe acting in My Name as risking their life. The action scenes are very desperate. They are trying to protect their life and to survive.
For her character, she had to train in different forms of martial arts. One technique was similar to the long and long stretches of female actor Atomic Blonde.
“So I watched different titles like Atomic Blonde and The Old Guard for inspiration,” said So Hee, referring to the stars of Charlize Theron who are also known for their hardcore fight scenes.
“The biggest challenge with acting was hurting others. If I didn’t train enough I could hurt others and I really didn’t want to, so I practiced a lot to finish the streak safely, ”she added.
For all the badass actions she got involved in on My Name, co-star Hee Soon said, “So Hee worked out a lot and gained 10 kilograms of muscle.”
So Hee reacted, “I exercised a lot and ate what I wanted, so I gained 10 pounds of the weight I had during Bride and Groom,” reflecting, “I think I can do 30 crunches in one workout I’m learning kickboxing these days.
Meanwhile, in another panel discussion with The STAR, So Hee explained that what she learned about acting after doing My Name was the importance of focus.
“I mean, I try to stay focused on set… whenever I’m working on different projects. But this time around, my character had to portray a lot of emotions through his body movements. So when I lose my focus a little, someone might get hurt. I had to maintain a level of focus all the time, consistently, ”she told The STAR.
When asked why people should watch her show, she replied, “You must have seen a lot of action genre pieces. But then, few of them are headed by a woman. It could be something of a charm unique to my series. And if you like the revenge theme, then in the show you can see how far you can go for the fun of it, how far you can get destroyed, and how far you can go to get that revenge.
Prior to So Hee’s first big breakthrough in The Bride and Groom, which incidentally got a Filipino adaptation on ABS-CBN, the actress was an arts student and then made her screen debut via music videos from bands. ‘K-pop idols.
Becoming one of the most in-demand among young Korean actors today, she recently topped Netflix’s romantic drama series Nevertheless, where she played an arts student stuck in an unlabeled relationship. In the two series mentioned above, her gorgeous looks are hard to ignore, but in My Name, she has undergone a “transformation”.
“An actor as a profession is actually a storyteller and (acting) deals with many genres, you know. And it’s a great opportunity to grow as an actor, to take on the challenge of playing something new and to break away from the limits that you set for yourself, ”said So Hee.
“When I read the script for My Name, I first thought it would be something that would make me grow as an actor. I wanted to break the boundaries of my previous images. I wanted, indeed, to visiting viewers with a completely different image from my previous roles, and that’s how I chose to be a part of this project.
My Name premieres on Netflix on October 15.
