Nutanix Boosts Cloud Data Management Services

Converged infrastructure provider Nutanix is ââexpanding its data management capabilities with a series of new capabilities revealed today at its Global .NEXT Digital Experience 2021 conference.
Among the features is a set of database management updates for the The Nutanix era service that are now generally available.
Nutanix Era enables organizations to deploy, patch, and manage databases, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle, in hybrid and multicloud environments.
Nutanix also unveiled a series of unstructured data management features, including the Nutanix Data Lens for its Nutanix cloud platform, which are under development and are expected to be publicly available at a future date to be determined.
Nutanix Data Lens is a new SaaS-based governance service that enables lifecycle management of file and object data, regardless of the location of deployment.
IDC Analyst Eric Burgener stated that Nutanix Data Lens helps improve Nutanix’s overall hybrid cloud management capabilities. He noted that
“This [Nutanix Data Lens] makes it much easier to manage remote data assets, making those who use them more productive, âsaid Brugener.
Nutanix Era Advances Data Management
The Nutanix Era database management platform also has simpler deployment options.
Brugener said the updated Nutanix Era offerings enable faster and easier deployment for the most popular database environments with one-click scaling. He noted that Nutanix is ââalso introducing performance features that allow more demanding databases to be hosted on the Nutanix Cloud platform.
During a press briefing before the virtual conference, CTO Nutanix Rajiv Mirani explained that a key element of the Era update was specifically related to the integration of existing databases with Nutanix. Mirani noted that the vendor’s goal was to make it easier for users to migrate databases without the need for manual reconfiguration.
âAll the best practices you need to achieve peak performance are now built into the migration process itself,â said Mirani.
Nutanix brings storage scalability to data management
Nutanix Era is also being improved with support for storage scaling.
Mirani explained that a common problem that arises in all organizations is that when they run a database, it grows and ultimately the storage capacity becomes limited.
Often, the database storage capacity is provisioned at the same time as a database deployment and its expansion would require some downtime. This is now changing at Nutanix with the Era update.
The update introduces what Mirani has called a âone-click operationâ that allows organizations to scale and resize databases in real time without downtime. It also includes a series of security enhancements including role-based access control. Mirani said the goal is to enable secure sharing of databases between different users.
Provide insight into unstructured data management
The goal of Nutanix Data Lens, currently in development, is to provide insight into an organization’s unstructured data that resides in files and object storage, Mirani said.
Data Lens provides users with information about different aspects of data, including understanding the access patterns for who reads and writes data.
Mirani noted that Data Lens can also help enable lifecycle management for data quality that will support an organization’s compliance efforts. Nutanix also integrates security into Data Lens with ransomware protection that will help identify potential risks.
