Ogden School District Likely Dropping ‘TO Smith’ Name for New Elementary School | Education
OGDEN – After deciding to rename a new building that will accommodate students who attended Horace Mann Elementary School last year, the Ogden School District is likely also renaming the TO Smith Elementary School and starting to consider a name. for the new Polk Elementary School. School.
Scheduled to open next year, East Ridge Elementary School takes the place of Horace Mann, and instead of Falcons, it will also have a new mascot – the Raptors.
This trend marks the intentions of the Ogden School Board to move away from schools named after people. While board members did not cite a specific reason for the change, the Expression of Desire comes that same year, many schools across the country decided to change their names that honored historical figures related to the slavery, racism and sexism.
As a result of numerous surveys sent to students, teachers and parents at TO Smith Elementary School, the school board has narrowed down the selection of new names and will return to the community with only two choices: Ogden Elementary School or the Liberty Elementary School.
The district cut TO Smith as an option at a recent council meeting because, like Horace Mann, he is named after an individual. Thomas O. Smith was the superintendent of the Ogden School District from 1948 to 1969. Prior to that, he was a teacher and principal in several schools in the district.
At the council meeting, Superintendent Rich Nye said the district was informing the community of its two options for a name, it would also give “an explanation which we honor, appreciate TO Smith, Superintendent Smith, and that there would have a place even inside the school that would keep this memory. “
The entire Ogden School District is located in the Town of Ogden and currently has a secondary school named after the Municipality. If the name is chosen to replace TO Smith, it would be the first elementary school to bear the name.
Liberty Elementary School was suggested due to the location of the new school on Liberty Avenue. School board vice president Joyce Wilson said she preferred to consider this name and Ogden because with the new building a new name would provide a fresh start, and board member Susan Richards said she liked Liberty’s “feelings of patriotism”.
The new building for students at TO Smith Elementary School is expected to be completed in 2022.
Construction around the skeleton of what was once Polk Elementary is also slated to be completed in 2022. In the coming weeks, the Ogden School District will begin to gather feedback on the possibility of renaming this school.
