Legendary track and field athlete Milkha Singh died of complications from COVID-19 on Friday evening. “We are going to have a Milkha Singh chair at Patiala Sports University,” the chief minister told reporters outside the Milkha Sector 8 residence.

Milkha became the first Indian athlete to win an individual gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, leading then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to declare a national holiday at his request.
While visiting the Milkha Residence here, Singh carried a photo of the sprinter with Nehru. “… That was the photo taken with Pandit Ji (Nehru) when he declared a national holiday in 1960. I wish I could have made it a national holiday, but I can’t,” Singh said.
“We (government of Punjab) have declared state mourning and the (tricolor) flag will fly at half mast. We are granting a state funeral, ”he added.
